What can I expect from counselling?

People usually come to counselling because they are seeking change and/or relief. You might be stuck in a pattern and wanting to move forward. You might be looking for support and skills to manage symptoms, solve a particular problem, overcome a specific challenge or simply to better understand yourself. I offer a safe and confidential space to explore those challenges and find ways to cope with what life throws your way.

What can be some benefits and possible risks of counselling?

Counselling can be helpful in a variety of situations. When counselling is effective, positive changes may occur including personal insight, learning new coping and problem-solving skills, increased self-confidence, relief from previously debilitating symptoms or patterns, and better relationships with others. Counselling may also involve some risks: you may experience strong emotions or be affected by recalling troubling incidents. As our emotional health affects who we are and how we interact with others, counselling can affect the delicate balance we have with our world.

Can I talk to you about any issue?

Yes. I am not however an expert in all therapeutic areas: if I believe that your needs might be better met by a therapist or other professional with a different area of expertise, I will refer you accordingly.

Is everything I discuss confidential?

Yes, everything you share in our counselling sessions is kept confidential and will not be shared with anyone else without your informed, voluntary and written consent. There are three exceptions to confidentiality:

  • When I have reasons to believe that you are in danger of hurting yourself or others
  • When there is suspicion or disclosure of abuse to vulnerable persons, such as a child, an elderly person or a person with disabilities
  • When records are subpoenaed by a court order.

I will make every effort to discuss these situations with you before I involve other professionals.

What are your fees?

$175.00 per standard 50 minute session.

Will a Registered Counsellor be covered under my extended health plan?

Every plan is different. Contact your plan provider before our first session to ensure that your plan covers Registered Therapeutic Counsellors (RTC) or Master Therapeutic Counsellors (MTC) designations. If covered, you will need my registration number (#2058) as well as the receipt that I will provide to you upon payment.

What happens if I don’t have extended coverage for counselling?

If your extended health plan does not currently cover RTC or MTC services, it may be possible to have your coverage expanded to include these services by having your HR department contact your group insurance provider and have it added. I will be happy to provide you with a letter to help you request this coverage. You might also be able to claim counselling services through your income taxes under medical expenses.

What is your availability?

I encourage my clients to book their appointments well in advance to ensure they get the time that works best for them.  I usually offer two evenings sessions weekly as well as Saturday sessions once per month (these fill up very quickly).

Do I need a referral from my family doctor?

Not at all: you can definitely self-refer. A referral is not necessary in terms of financial coverage. It can be very helpful when your therapist works in consultation with your family doctor; we can discuss this option in your first appointment.

Does the clinic have a cancellation policy?

Our time is valuable and cannot be extended if you arrive late. 48 hours notice is required to postpone or cancel a scheduled appointment. I request full payment for that appointment when notice is not provided. As most weeks there are clients waiting to be seen (waitlisted), 48 hours notice is necessary to call out and offer cancelled sessions.

What form of payment do you accept?

I currently accept e-transfers and a receipt is provided at time of payment.
